There’s a holiday I go to that has a rock that lots of women swim out to, it’s in a magical place called Skala Erresou in Lesvos, Greece. All the hundreds of women who swim to the rock every season are called Rockers. I’m a proud rocker and I miss this swim, the people and the place ever year when I leave.
I’ve just had an amazing holiday, I even managed to swim to this rock (approximately 400 meters one way) during sunset entirely on my own with my faithful snorkel and mask. I wanted to remember this moment in time so I took a selfie before the swim with the sun setting next to Sappho’s face in the cliff edge.
So .. I did it, a rock swim on my own and watched the sunset from the rock. Though next time I do it I’ll swim there and back and then watch the sunset from the beach on the rock .. that dark sea was a little unnerving to swim back in!
I wanted to scream in joy of achieving my goal on my own, despite some healthy fear. Don’t worry folks knew where I was and what I was doing .. but I did it on my own. I even fought some irrational fear of a shark suddenly appearing in the waters, even though there’s never been a shark in that bay before. During the day I love watching and looking at the different types of fishies, they are fun to watch and observe.
So while I didn’t squeal or scream in joy I did celebrate my achievement with icecream .. so .. close enough ;)
Till next year my little bit of magic swim time, I’ll see you again my little rock, we have some more adventures to be had you and me.
